Taking its title from Hardy’s poem Proud Songsters, the work reflects Donwood’s fascination with the natural world and the atmospheric landscapes of Wessex. The title refers to the elements from which the birds in Hardy’s poem emerge, connecting the fleeting beauty of nature with the landscape that has featured so strongly in Donwood’s work.
