Silently I Footed An Uphill Road is a limited-edition print by Stanley Donwood, inspired by Thomas Hardy’s poem The Last Signal.
The title is taken from the opening line of Hardy’s poem, written as a tribute to his friend, the Dorset poet William Barnes. Donwood’s work draws on the atmospheric landscapes and sense of place associated with Hardy’s Wessex, translating the poem’s themes of landscape, memory and loss into his distinctive visual language.
